Articles | Benidorm, a Sunny Paradise
Located in the sunny Valencia region, Benidorm is a costal town in the Alicante province. Before the 1960’s it was a small village, fast-forward to today and it stands as one of the most popular travel destinations in the whole of Spain, striking to look at with its skyscrapers situated right on the beach and not too different looking in this respect to the USA’s Miami. Its permanent population stands at around 65,000 with this increasing to half a million in the summer months due to tourists and holiday home owners. The mountain sitting behind Benidorm, the Puig Campana, dwarfs its city as it rises 1406 metres high and is a great place to visit if you want to get away from the beaches and experience something different there are walking trails mapped out for your convenience.
Divided into two halves, Poniente and Levante, each has their own beachfront and local charms. A few miles from the shore lies Peacock Island, an uninhabited paradise reachable by boat for excursions, with companies running trips in the summer. The surrounding mountains give rise to a fantastic micro-climate, giving 3400 hours of sunshine a year and an average temperature of 26 degrees for the summer months and a very warm sea, perfect for holiday goers and one of the things which makes Benidorm so popular.
The cuisine in the area is one of the finest points of holidays in Benidorm, with many traditional tapas restaurants and bars serving food from lunchtime through till the evening and open well into the night in keeping with the Spanish tradition of eating around 10 o clock in the evening! Tapas is popular due to the diversity of its dishes and, in turn, the fact that you can try many things during one sitting which is perfect for groups of tourists wanting a big communal meal. Be sure to try Patata Brava, Chorizo Riojana and Calamari, the most popular and tastiest things on the menu as well as the perennial Spanish dish of Paella. With cheap flights to Spain readily available from companies such as Monarch and hotels available to suit your needs, Benidorm is a great place to visit in the summer and possibly better during Easter as it’s still hot, but also cheaper and less crowded than the summer months. Happy holidays!
