A port city located in Andalusia in Southern Spain on the Costa del Sol coast of the Mediterranean, Malaga is a popular tourist destination for many reasons. Translating to ‘the sunny coast’ the Costa del Sol can be incredibly hot during the summer months, with an average temperature of 30 degrees in July and August, and with picturesque beaches too. Whether you’re visiting to sunbathe, sightsee or explore the city’s culture, there’s something for everyone.

Things to do & see – The fascinating town of Granada is nearby to Malaga and makes for a good daytrip as you can see the historical significance of the place in its role during the Spanish inquisition, as Granada was an independent Muslim province taken over by the Spanish and the remains of old mosques and outer city walls can still be seen today. In Malaga itself is Gibralfaro Castle with its spectacular gardens, the Malaga Walls and the Flavian Roman Theatre, all of which are great sights to visit and areas of cultural and historical importance. But Malaga’s pride and joy is its status as the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, and the Picasso Foundation’s Museum is home to scores of his works, as well as being a great place to find out more about the artist himself and see what influenced his works.

Accommodation – The hotels and villas in Malaga are as good as anywhere in Spain, with the usual range of high spec expensive accommodation to mid-priced options, cheap ones and campsites too. If you want to save money then try and look to stay away from the more touristy areas as hotels around there will be more expensive. Villas offer a good alternative if there’s a group of between 4 -8 of you as the weekly rent split between all of you can be as cheap as £150-200 for the week and for this you get the extra luxury and comfort which a villa brings. Malaga also has its own airport so you can save money by checking out airline sites for good deals on cheap flights to Malaga, with companies like Monarch offering regular flights in the summer months.

The Food – Restaurants are numbered in Malaga, you’ll spend more time deciding which of the good options to choose from than you will trying to find a good one. Again they will be cheaper if you look for ones away from the more touristy areas, and with a little searching you can always find a lovely traditional tapas bar in the cobbled, quiet back streets. Tapas is the usual order and allows you to try all kinds of food in one sitting, making it a great way to wind down the days. Happy holidays!
